RCVS and VN Council elections: Candidates Now Being Sought

Nominations are now being sought for candidates to stand in the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeon Council (RCVS Council) and Veterinary Nurse Council (VN Council) elections. The deadline for nominations is 5pm on 31 January 2013.

There are six seats due to be filled on RCVS Council, and two on VN Council. Those elected will take their seats on RCVS Day next July, to serve four-year terms. Council members will be expected to spend at least six to eight days a year attending Council and Committee meetings, working parties and subcommittees (for which a loss-of-earnings allowance is available).

Each candidate needs to find two proposers; any veterinary surgeon or veterinary nurse (who is not presently on either Council) may propose one candidate for RCVS or VN Council respectively.

Nomination forms, full instructions and guidance notes are available from www.rcvs.org.uk/rcvscouncil13 and www.rcvs.org.uk/vncouncil13.

To help those considering standing for election to either Council to better understand the role of the Councils, and what will be expected of them if elected, the RCVS will be holding a special Meet the RCVS Day on 15 January. This will give candidates and prospective candidates the opportunity to meet the College Officers and senior staff, and find out what goes on behind the scenes.

Prospective candidates can contact Fiona Harcourt for more information on f.harcourt@rcvs.org.uk.

Cat Regularly Catches Bus!

A 15 year-old moggy named Dodger has taken to hopping on and off buses at the bus station near his home.

Dodger is such a regular customer that drivers know which stop to let him off at. His owner believes that Dodger first took a liking to the buses as they are like warm greenhouses when the sun is on them!

A spokesman for bus firm First said they didn’t mind Dodger on their buses but didn’t actively encourage him.

He said: “The drivers have been asked not to feed it because we recognise that cat has an owner and we do not want to discourage it from returning home for food and shelter, but in principle we do not have a problem with it being around the bus station.

“Given this cat is elderly we suspect it would be eligible for free travel, perhaps a bus puss, if such a thing existed.”

Scientists have reversed paralysis in dogs…

“Scientists have reversed paralysis in dogs after injecting them with cells grown from the lining of their nose.”

For the longest time, nerve damage and spinal injury has been one of the last frontiers in veterinary and human medicine. Damage to nerves has generally been considered to be irreversible and permanent. That may be about to change, if researchers at at the Medical Research Council and Cambridge Veterinary School are on the right track. Cells from the nasal cavities of dogs, called ‘olfactory ensheathing cells’ were removed, grown, and expanded in laboratory, before being transplanted into the injury site.

This is *not* a cure – but many of the treated pets showed improvement. Good luck to MRC and Cambridge Vet School – we look forward to hearing more about these exciting developments!

CAW Students – Design a Poster or Poem and be in with a chance of winning £100!

In recognition of Anti-Bullying Week 2012 (19-23 November) we are running a poster/poem competition for all our students with the winning entrant receiving £100!

Anti-Bullying Week has been running for six years now and this year’s theme is ‘We’re better without bullying’. Posters and poems can be any interpretation of this theme.

This year’s theme highlights how bullying can prevent people reaching their full potential. As a College we have a zero tolerance policy and work hard to create an environment where people can learn and develop their skills and talents to their maximum potential without fear of bullying.

Entries must be received by 1st December 2012 and can be handed into lecturers or emailed to marketing@caw.ac.uk – good luck!!

Staff and Students Raise Lots for Children In Need

Staff and students from The College of Animal Welfare’s Huntingdon and Leeds centres raised over £200 for Children In Need on Friday 16 November by wearing spots or pyjamas and holding a cake sale!

A variety of ‘spottiness’ was seen around the Huntingdon centre – from spotty nails and spotty shirts to spotty face paints and spotty table cloths for desks! The Leeds centre saw students coming to college in their pyjamas and onesies!

Leslie Heaton-Smith, Director at The College of Animal Welfare commented: “It was lovely to see all our staff and students come together to raise money for such a great cause”. He continued “We aimed to raise at least £100, so we are delighted that we managed to beat this target by some margin with the final total standing at £202.73!”

New Spikey Green Turns Your Dog’s Meal Into a Game!

The Company of Animals have announced a revolutionary way to turn your dog’s meal into a challenging game! By entertaining your dog with their own food allowance you can help to remove problems such as inappropriate chewing and boredom.

Simply scatter the desired amount of food across the Green and watch your dog ‘work’ to push the food out between the many blades of grass. It has been designed so that one size can be used for all dogs; it is made of hard plastic (without phthalates) and can be cleaned in the dishwasher.
